How Our Program Works

Each week you’ll be immersed in the professional career path of your choice. We provide mentorship along the way with industry experts. At the end of your journey, you will combine all the skills you have learned and showcase them in a final project for your portfolio.

What Your Experience Will Look Like

Session 1

Professional Development

Once accepted, you will spend 6 weeks developing professionally in your chosen program. You will have the opportunity to meet others from your cohort, engage in exciting activities, and receive special appearances from industry mentors.

Session 2

Level Up: Training Intensives

In this phase, you'll collaborate with your cohort to create your capstone project. You'll explore the creative process from ideation to portfolio building. As you progress, you will have the option to join a mentor pod with 2-3 cohort members and an industry professional mentor.

Session 3

Showtime

You've gained confidence and an exciting portfolio, now it's time for you to showcase your projects to the world. We will be commemorating your progress with a final activity and an end-of-year celebration.

  • What exactly will I learn in the AIM-N-Inspire program?
    In the AIM-N-Inspire program, you will receive comprehensive training in animation, interactive gaming, media production (including film and TV shows), and new media with virtual and mixed realities. This includes hands-on experience with state-of- the-art equipment, professional development workshops, and mentorship from industry experts. You will need to select ONE track to apply for.
  • Who is eligible to apply for the AIM-N-Inspire program?
    The program is designed for foster and system-impacted youth ages 16-24 in LA County. This includes current and former foster youth, homeless individuals, and those who have been involved with the justice system.
  • What does the scholarship cover, and are there any costs to me?
    The scholarship, valued at $3500, covers all enrollment and program activity costs, including access to all necessary equipment for projects and events. There are no costs to participants, making this program entirely free for accepted individuals.
  • What is the commitment required for the AIM-N-Inspire program?
    Participants are expected to attend at least 90% of all scheduled activities and events, which span from April to December, divided into three phases: Professional Development Bootcamp, Media Arts Summer Training, and Post-Production and Exhibition.
  • How will this program prepare me for a career in the creative economy?
    The AIM-N-Inspire program offers state-of-the-art training, networking opportunities with industry professionals, and development of marketable skills. This preparation aims to enable participants to pursue careers in animation, gaming, media production, and new media industries.
  • What opportunities are there for showcasing my work?
    Successful participants will have their work showcased at intermittent showcases, the culmination community event, and the annual Real To Reel Global Film Festival and other digital distribution platforms, providing exposure and opportunities to connect with industry professionals and audiences.
  • How do I apply, and what is the selection process?
    Interested individuals can apply through the Better Youth website by submitting an interest form and application kit. The selection process involves a review of applications to assess eligibility and fit for the program, potentially followed by interviews for final selection.
  • Can I participate in the program if I have no prior experience in animation, gaming, or media production?
    Yes, the program is designed to accommodate participants at various skill levels, including beginners. The focus is on cultivating talent, creativity, and a passion for storytelling through media.
